An otaku podcast

On the plus side, we are now at the point of the season where we remember maybe 10% of the characters’ names, which is an achievement to be proud of. On the minus, this was kind of a sucky week for anime, with a lot of shows treading water after their introductory arcs. Fortunately, Bakuon!! is here to save us with its tales of Jesus’ favorite motorcycle, and I discover that a cartoon I saw when I was practically a toddler was an anime, meaning I’ve been an anime fan for even longer than I thought.

In other news, someone on the show is investigating the massive, nubile world of cosplay boobs (not telling you who), we learn that rampaging school girls in ankle-length pleated skirts were once a real matter of public concern, High School Fleet fails to garner the Official Navy Seal of Approval,  and Sal has a friend of a friend who may be a Tonkatsu DJ…or maybe just a regular DJ? I’m just going to assume all DJ-ing involves fried delicacies now.

Questions and comments welcome…unless you want to defend the idea of three episodes constituting a “season” of anything, then you can just go to hell quite frankly.

This time around, Lifesong and I prove that we are terrible at dropping shows, because we like pretty much everything even when we should definitely know better. LB and Sal prove more disciplined, meaning they will actually have time for proper meals and acts of personal hygiene this season. Meanwhile, Big Order premieres and joins our massive list of shows, and uh…is it just me, or does that title not fit the show at all? Big Ordersounds like it should be the subtitle for Season 4 of Wagnaria!!, not the title of the show that will undoubtedly launch a dozen feminist thinkpieces with titles like “Big Order and Japan’s Troubling Consent Dynamics.”

I mean, can’t you just see the Spring 2017 Anichart? “When an American Football team makes Wagnaria Family Restaurant its to-go stop after games, will Sota, Popura and Inami be able to keep up with the tremendous demand for chocolate milkshakes, bottomless bowls of curry udon and metric tons of hamburger steak ? Find out inWagnaria!!: Big Order in Little Restaurant!”

…C’mon, you would watch that. We all would.

This week, we reveal the huge existential question of the Spring 2016 Anime season: could (Haven’t You Heard? I’m)Sakumoto-kun be awesome enough to keep Tanaka-kun (is always Listless) from falling asleep? Now, as anime podcasters, it is beyond our ken to answer questions of this magnitude; only to provoke them, and hope that far greater minds will have the courage and intellectual fortitude to pick up the gauntlet.

In other news, Lifesong and I share the same embarrassing confession, LB is disappointed by the suspiciously low murder rate in Nanaki Village, Ace Attorney andHaiFuri do just enough to make us continue watching them almost despite ourselves,Space Patrol Luluco tries to seduce Sal with its Trigger-isms and fails hard, and we ponder the lack of good tonkatsu restaurants in the greater New York area.

Oh, and one more thing: in Cerebrus, the protagonist’s mother is named Kissmeteetee–Kissmeteetee— and I completely forgot to mention that on the show. I should probably be shot.

We get underway with the Spring 2016 season, which has plenty of yummy bread, salacious bears, and a surprising amount of forboding references to the Greater East Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere thus far. Lifesong has watched everything and enjoyed a lot of it, LB has watched many shows and is on the fence about a few, while Sal didn’t have time to watch practically anything and keeps distracting me from this fact by throwing shiny things in my face; sadly, this works, and we can only assume it will continue to work for the forseeable future.

Remember how I kept threatening to do another anime podcast? Well, I make good on my threats– at least, my podcast-related threats. This week, Lifesong of Spiced Sevenand Salvador of Japanator join me to discuss Dagashi KashiERASED, and our hopes/fears for the Spring 2016 season. Warning: spoilers for the movie The Butterfly Effect in our ERASED discussion.

Since we kept it pretty simple for this first episode, I didn’t go nuts and make an incredibly detailed outline. However, for those of you that cannot function without an outline (I understand), here you are:

0:00 Intro and Dagashi Kashi: do we even want any of this candy?

7:33 ERASED: did we need more mystery in this mystery?

16:59 Spring 2016 anime chat, plus we solve the mystery of Mari Okada’s variable quality, once and for all.

44:20 SPECIAL BONUS SECTION: Why does everyone hate KyoAni?

Comments welcome, but if you just comment to point out that I kept pronouncing Mari Okada’s name as “Marie” like a dumb gaijin, don’t bother because I am a dumb gaijin and these things happen. Seriously, I hope some anime fans enjoy our little show, and I’m excited to be podcasting again:).
